They can watch the student’s writing process in real time, offer direct feedback, and create a learning environment where questions are welcomed without fear or pressure. Perhaps most exciting of all, online tutoring makes it possible to build meaningful learning relationships across great distances.
From Indiana in the USA, volunteer Darrell Turner has been meeting weekly for several years with an adult learner in Brazil. Using Scripture-based writing assignments and interactive grammar lessons, he helps his student grow in both language skills and faith. The learner not only practices English, but also draws closer to God through thoughtful reflection on the Word.
Darrell shares, “For each session with my Brazilian learner, I select a Bible passage and provide questions about it for her to answer during the week before we meet. During our meetings, I give her exercises in English grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I also model correct pronunciations for her in response to her reading out loud.”
“On another learning platform, I help a fifth-grade student who lives with his mother in Rochester, New York. They use a Christian homeschool curriculum, and he has exercises that include doing research on history, geography, and the Bible and writing paragraphs about what he has learned. Other lessons include creative writing, such as poems and short stories. By providing feedback on his work, I am helping him to grow in his Christian faith and his reading and writing skills.”
Online tutoring may not offer the same interaction as an in-person class classroom, but it brings something equally rewarding: the ability to reach, teach, and disciple across the globe. It is a meaningful way to invest in someone’s life—for now and eternity.
